Copying Lab Notebooks

I have a question about lab notebooks which I don't believe has been addressed
yet. Once a copy (in whatever format) has been made, what happens to the original
?

Is it the experience of the people on this list that the original is stored
off-site, or is the original still made available to the researchers ?

>From my perspective I would rather that the original is safely stored, but wonder
what happens in real-life.
