CA does not cover all U.S. patents, but covers most if not all chemical
topics. Although if you found the original EP in the CA file, you could
expect the U.S. equivalent there also. However, CAS has only recently
been adding equivalents to the CA file patent records and equivalents
have been added to the backfile working retrospectively. Although their
respective methods are not equally well documented, Derwent and CAS
apparently use somewhat different methods to determine equivalents -- at
least the results are sometimes different.
