Sorry Alan, can't really go along with that. Maybe the terms aren't ideal,
but they are the best we've got at present. The main complications, frankly,
are the irregular US term "issued" (of which I'm growing fonder by the day),
and the (reversible) US distinction between "provisional" and "regular"
applications, which disappeared from UK law upon harmonisation with the EPC
in 1978. Maybe when the US system is further modified later this year we
shall be able to adopt a more uniform terminology? In the meantime, and
possibly for ever, the subject will remain a complex one.
