Jon,

I agree with Andy Berks that there is no short answer to your question,
since there are so many resources, both online and on the Internet. I have
written several articles describing the capabilities of online vs. Internet
patent information resources, mostly intended to give ammunition to
information professionals whose management is saying, "Why are we paying for
these expensive patent databases when you can get it all for free on the
Internet?" I'll be glad to send you copies on request.

I'm also not sure what you mean by "mining" chemical information. Certainly
all the online hosts have some statistical analysis capabilities. But in
general, if your student looked at STN, he should certainly also look at
Questel-Orbit. Last year they mounted all the Orbit patent databases on
Questel-Orbit prior to Orbit's demise, so Q-O has probably the most
extensive collection of IP databases, both patents and trademarks, of all
the online hosts. And Q-O has some fairly sophisticated statistical
analysis capabilities online.
