First and foremost the inventor needs to understand the time limits for
filing an application, especially the on sale and public use bars that
apply in the US. Also, what precautions are necessary to prevent
jeopardizing their patent rights abroad if they feel international
protection maybe sought.
The inventor may try reading Pressman's "Patent It Yourself" by Nolo
Press. It is used by many public libraries to help their patrons deal
with how to file a patent application, so the small inventor could check
it out of the local library instead of buying it (I think it's $35.00).
The text is very readable and practical. There is an example that
starts with the lab notebook (and its importance) and
ends up with writing the claims, along with many hints on how to get the
application issued.
