Viagra - a hard one to understand

Colleagues:

I'm genuinely puzzled as to the reason why we should have seen five
applications published during the past two weeks (one EP and four PCTs)
seeking to claim new methods of using sildenafil (three of them intranasal,
of all things). Those reading Current Patents Gazette will have seen our
editorial comments. It may just be coincidence that all five companies (one
of them Pfizer) have independently conceived a new route of administration
and decided to to file an appropriate patent application - or it may be that
something happened in May or June of 1998 to trigger this simultaneous
creative outpouring. Does anyone out there know the answer?

I'd appreciate your comments.....
